It is with great pleasure that I accept the position of editor for DOLL NEWS Magazine. We have come a long way since our first issue. Small paper leaflets have grown into big, beautiful and colorful pages of dolls, articles, patterns, paper dolls and more. Each issue reflects the efforts of dedicated authors, researchers, artists, advertisers and doll collectors, all sharing a variety of interests in the wonderful hobby of collecting dolls.
Winter's issue warms the heart with hues of red. January's birthstone, the garnet, is a symbol of friendship and trust. Our cover feature employs the striking hue as the perfect complement to Darlene Lane's stunning Barrois reproduction, "Mademoiselle Chantelle." Author Deb Hoffman writes an intriguing account of 19th century French dollmaker Eugene Barrois and his influence on today's doll makers. Mary Ann Shandor contributes her knowledge and expertise with a beautiful French costume designed to fit the Dollspart Huret Jointed Body. A lovely Barrois paper doll by talented paper doll artist, Victoria Christopherson, completes our Barrois fantasy.
UFDC's 69th Annual Convention, to be held in Phoenix, AZ, is highlighted, along with a registration form. Come join us for a "Passport to Adventure."
Rebekah Kaufman shares a few pages of adorable and rare Steiff Teddy Bears. We'll call on the remarkable Miss Rose Percy one last time, as she completes her tour of duty with a final visit to the Land of Lincoln "“ Springfield, Illinois. Laurie McGill charms us with a story about a very curious and rare doll with a special attachment to beloved French artist, Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Florence Theriault shares her insight and provides exquisite photos in a special feature about the rare and fascinating dolls of Myla Perkins, author of Black Dolls.
Enjoy a last look at UFDC's 2017 Annual Convention, with beautiful award"‘winning dolls from the Competitive Exhibit, along with highlights from Special Exhibits and Junior Collector events. Speaking of Juniors, in this issue we introduce the "Junior Collector's Corner," a special section reserved for our Junior Collectors, filled with updates and activities.
I envision an exciting future for DOLL NEWS. As editor, I will do my very best to maintain the integrity of this magazine at the highest standard you have come to expect and love.
